WHAT IS TOOTH DECAY?

Tooth decay is a preventable dental condition caused by build-up of bacteria in the mouth that results in the destruction of tooth enamel and the formation of cavities. Poor oral hygiene, poor diet, and inadequate fluoride exposure are all factors that can increase the risk of developing this condition. Practicing good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing daily, eating a healthy, balanced diet, and getting enough fluoride are all important steps toward preventing tooth decay. Additionally, regular visits to the dentist can also help to identify any problem spots before they become more serious.

WHAT IS GUM DISEASE?

Gum disease, also known as periodontitis, is an infection of the gums that can be caused by poor oral hygiene or genetic predisposition. The oral bacteria along with debris and saliva forms plaque. This plaque hardens to form calcified deposits known as calculus. These in turn become infected causing gingivitis, leading to irritation. If it is not treated it can lead to loosening of the teeth which is caused by the spread of infection into the underlying bones. To avoid gum disease and its associated problems, it is important to practice good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing thoroughly twice a day, routine dental check-up followed by cleaning can help to check the disease at bay.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU GO TO THE DENTIST?

When it comes to visiting the dentist, prevention is always the best approach. It is generally recommended that adults and children visit their dentist at least twice a year to ensure their teeth and gums remain healthy over time. During these routine visits, the dentist will perform an exam and check for signs of tooth decay or gum disease. They may also take x-rays to detect any underlying issues that don't show up on the surface. In addition to bi-annual exams, individuals who are at higher risk for oral health problems should consider more frequent visits for greater protection. Visit your nearby dentist and they can help you analyse your risk factors and provide you with a treatment plan catering to your specific needs.

AT WHAT AGE SHOULD CHILDREN GO TO THE DENTIST?

Having your child visit a dentist for the first time is an important step in helping them maintain healthy teeth and gums for years to come. During this initial visit, the dentist will check for cavities, assess your child’s risk for decay, and discuss ways to reduce the chances of developing tooth decay. Additionally, starting dental visits from an early age can help your child become comfortable and familiar with the dentist’s office environment as they get older. It is generally recommended that children have their first dental check-up by age one, or six months after their first tooth erupts. It is important to prepare a child by telling them that their teeth have to be counted and cleaned and maybe even have some photos taken. It is important from the parent’s part to refrain from discussing their dental anxiety or negative dental experience. It is important to avoid words like pain, hurt, needle, injection, scary etc.
